Mountain Safety
Skier safety is the responsibility and authority of the Powderhorn Ski Patrol, an organization of trained professionals who are at Powderhorn Resort for your benefit. It is their job to provide assistance and information, so do not hesitate to ask them for help or information!
If you sustain an injury, cross your skis in the snow above the accident and send someone for aid. Report accidents to any lift operator, member of the ski patrol, or to any mountain employee. Colorado Ski Safety Act of 1979 In Colorado's Ski Safety Act of 1979, as amended, the Colorado General Assembly recognized that dangers and risks are inherent in the sport of skiing, regardless of any and all reasonable safety measures which may be employed. Under the Act, each skier expressly accepts and assumes the risk of and all legal responsibility for any injury resulting from any of the inherent dangers and risks of skiing including cliffs, extreme terrain, trees, jumps and freestyle terrain. Important additional provisions include the following:
Each skier is responsible for knowing and skiing within the limits of his ability and maintaining a proper lookout so as to be able to avoid other skiers and objects. Skiers shall not ride the lifts or ski while their ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol. All skiers involved in a collision shall leave their names and addresses with the Ski Patrol. Skiers shall not enter a trail that is closed. Skiers shall not enter public or private lands from an adjoining ski area when such land has been closed by its owner and is so posted.
Your Responsibility Code: Ski under control and in such a manner that you can stop or avoid other skiers or objects. When skiing downhill or overtaking another skier, you must avoid the skier below you. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above. When entering a trail or starting downhill, yield to other skiers. All skiers shall wear retention straps or other devices to help prevent runaway skis. You should keep off closed trails and posted areas and observe all posted signs. Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride, and unload safely.
